Back in August, I started doing workouts to try and lose some weight and get in shape but I didn’t have any workout tapes (DVD’s) and just dealt with videos on YouTube but what I really wanted was something I could watch on my TV since it was bigger and I REALLY did need a visual example of how to do certain workouts and a variety of different workouts. So I went old school and decided to get myself the Richard Simmons Sweatin to the Oldies DVD set because I loved those videos back in junior high.
They were doing great for me for awhile and I still use them but some days I really don’t want to do aerobics and I needed to work on flexibility and endurance more. That’s when I decided that I wanted to try out Yoga. Now I hadn’t the first clue about Yoga and kept looking for videos that were geared towards absolute beginners with NO balance or coordination. Let me tell you, that was not an easy feat at all.
Then I received an email from a rep at YAS Fitness Centers asking me if I wanted to do a review for their Skull Yoga Mat and the No OM Zone DVD and Book. Since Kimberly Fowler designed the No OM Zone to be specifically for newbies and and is easy and practical, I knew this was a great opportunity for me. Also, the fact that there is NO chanting and all that other stuff, was a major plus in my book. Sure meditation and all that is great for some, NOT me!
The book is a great tool to use with the DVD because there are step by step instructions on each pose that really helped guide me to be SOMEWHAT successful. I am happy to say that some of the poses are actually quite easy for me and I am getting much better. I even FEEL better too!
Now, as far as the mat is concerned, weeeeelllll, I LOVE it!! I’m not really into the sweet and girly stuff, and the skulls make me feel like a total badass (excuse my french!!)!! I am the kind of person that lives in the “out of sight, out of mind” mindset but since I love showing off this mat, it sits on the back of my couch ready to greet me every morning. It really has helped me stay on track!
The mat itself is a very good thickness, even for me and my hip bursitis, and has great grip so no slipping and sliding for me. Oh and the Skull design is based on the fact that when Kimberly Fowler would race as a triathlete, skulls were her symbol. They were on her handlebars, apparel and she even has a skull tattoo on her back. They always helped her take it to the next level. In a way, I guess they were her motivation, and I know why since they are motivating me as well!
