We have lived in our current home now for 7 years since Gavin was about 2 and a 1/2 and a very mischevious child. He loved to sneak things to his room that he was not allowed to have, like the time he stole his sister’s scissors and cut not only his hair but his stuffed animals fur and…wait for it…his eyelashes and eyebrows. I kid you not, he looked strange and to make it even better, he got his hair all the way down to the scalp and never hurt himself at all.
Considering that he did that, it’s not really a stretch of the imagination that he would also sneak crayons, markers and even paint to his room. Yes, he did all that and boy did he love the masterpieces he created in there. he kept up the artistry until about 2 years ago and asked to redo his room to make it look nicer. Then the next day, he glued a picture to the wall and we knew he wasn’t ready.
Fast forward 2 years, Gavin is much more responsible and mature and takes care of his things now. I knew it was time to bite the bullet and give his room a makeover. We were waiting for his 10th birthday in September, but then we got the opportunity to work with a PCA (Professional Color Advisor) for a FREE color consultation with Dunn-Edwards. The time had presented itself a little early but that didn’t matter to the boy, he was happy!
We already knew that we were going to do a Super Hero room for him, with Avengers playing a big part of that theme and we wanted to play off his favorite colors, red and blue. So we picked him up a new bed and bookshelf in red and some new bedding and curtains in navy. Then it was time to pick the color. I didn’t want to go with a primary blue, which is definitely more comic book/superhero because I wanted the color to be one that he could grow with and would seem too young for him when he gets older. We ended up choosing a color that was more of a grayish blue and absolutely gorgeous, Frozen Lake. It was perfect!
The PCA that we worked with at Dunn-Edwards, Erica, suggested that we use Dunn-Edwards Paints EVEREST, interior. It is Ultra-premium, Zero VOC (volatile organic compounds), 100% acrylic paint and is low odor. We had no problem with Gavin sleeping in his room shortly after the paint dried.
Next step, after getting all the supplies from Dunn-Edwards of course, was to clear out his room and clean the walls and fan of all dust. As strange as it sounds, Lexi actually enjoys cleaning the fans in the house, so yes, I allow her to do so because I certainly don’t want to!
Next, we had to assess the damage. As you can see, not only has he colored on the walls, he has also peeled off paint and even the drywall.
This was the spot where he glued a picture to his wall. We tried to get it all off but had to sand it down to get everything off. Never glue paper to walls, it will not come off easily.
Laying down the plastic was interesting to say the least, in the end, we taped it to the wall to protect the carpet and my husband took a piece of cardboard and a brush to paint the baseboard once everything else was done.
And let’s not forget about the door, which also housed some of his greatest drawings, at least he thought so when he was younger.
After we sanded the walls a bit and then added vinyl spackling paste to the areas that needed it the most, it was time to prime the walls.
We picked up Dunn-Edwards Ultra-Grip Multi-Surface Primer hoping it would cover everything up well.
There were a few spots that required 2 coats of the primer, the most stubborn parts that Gavin had fun with. The rest was done in 1 coat which was a pleasant surprise!
We even coated the door with the primer but decided to only paint the inside of the door. Now, the outside is white again and even looks better than the rest of the doors in that hallway.
While the door dried, we set about painting the rest of the room and that’s when we realized that we picked an amazing color.
Once all the paint was dry, we put all the fixtures back together, put the door up and moved everything back into his room. We even arranged his furniture to look a little more grown up. Gavin couldn’t contain his excitement when he saw the final product, especially because we surprised him with a few new Super Hero items that he did not know he had coming to him, such as the tin wall signs.
The work perfectly with his Iron Man canvas he got for Christmas.
Hulk is there to encourag him to get his homework done!
The body pillow was also new and he loves it.
Gavin loves his new room, especially the color. It was definitely worth all the hours spent doing his room, just to see his smile! And Dunn-Edwards is THE place for color and quality paint from here on out. Not only do I love the paints and coverage, the service is amazing.
