Growing up, I always suffered from pains in my hips and knees and looking back, I realize that it was due to my weight. As I got older, the pain increased but was always manageable, until I was pregnant with my daughter. While my knee pain has always been fairly minimal in comparison, my hip pain at that time became unbearable, to the point that I finally saw a doctor about it.
As it turned out, I had hip bursitis, or more specifically, Ischial Bursitis, which is the inflammation of the ischial bursa in the upper buttock area. The treatment for Ischial Bursitis is typically a cortisone shot directly in the bursa, or worst case scenario, drainage of the fluid sac that builds up on the bursa if it is infected.
Unfortunately, at that time, the doctor was not able to do anything for me because of the pregnancy. He advised me to take an appropriate over the counter pain medicine and not put to much strain on my hips. He also told me to come back after my daughter was born to get me shot. That actually never happened because my hip pain became more manageable after she was born and also because the thought of a shot of cortisone right into my hip terrifies me to no end.
Instead of the shot, which I would have to take every time that my bursitis flares up, I opted for home remedies such as pain meds, rest and avoiding activities that cause pain. And while this has worked for 16 years, I am starting to realize that I will need to start getting proper treatment for the pain as it is getting harder to manage as I get older. Even my knees are starting to give me a hard time lately and I am beginning to wonder if I might have bursitis in my knees as well.
Since now is the time to start properly handling my hip and knee pain, it is also time for me to Hit Play and get back to living life without constant pain. What is Hit Play you ask?
