It’s that time wonderful time of year again, time for the kids to go back to school, see their friends, learn new and exciting things and best of all, this mom gets her sanity back! Now, while we all love it when the kids go back to school in our house, especially the kids, getting ready for back to school can be quite daunting. There is just so much to do to make sure that the kids have what they need to be successful but no need to fret, follow these three tips and you should be golden!
Gather All Essential Supplies
From clothes to binders and pencils, this is the best time to make sure that the kids have everything they need to succeed this school year. This also includes making sure that all important forms are filled out for the school and making sure they have items needed for extra curricular activities that they want to join. This year Gavin is playing the violin and of course that requires purchasing one for him.
I’ll admit, during the summer, we really have no set sleeping schedule and in most cases, no eating schedule. We pretty much slept and ate when we needed to and as much as I hate that we do that and it messes with me more than I care to admit, even to myself, it is what we do. However, about a week or so before school starts, I always start the kids on a specific schedule and it is typically based around what their schedule looks like at school.
The kids get their specified bedtimes for the year, of course different for each kid since they are 8 and 16, and I start going to bed at a decent hour as well. Then, morning comes and I like for the kids to be up and ready to start the day before 8 since their schools start at that time. Snacks and meal times are also scheduled so that their little tummies can get used to NOT eating whenever.
Before we started doing this, back to school time was a mess and getting the kids acclimated to the new school year, AFTER it had started, was pure chaos. It is smooth sailing now!
There are certain things that should be done once a year and I feel that back to school time is a perfect time to get these done. Doctor well checkups are one of them to make sure that the kids are ready to tackle the new year. Also, this is the time that my kids get their shots if they need them. Dental visits are also crucial at this point, cleanings and any other work should be done before school starts. This ensures that they have nice pearly white smiles for picture day and also keeps them from missing school during the year.
Another thing that I recommend getting done once a year is eye exams and I’m definitely not the only one considering that August is Eye Exam Awareness Month. Think About Your Eyes is a national public awareness campaign that urges people to get annual eye exams in order to promote the benefits of eye health.
Considering that both my husband and I suffer from poor eye sight, we knew that there was a possibility that the kids would need glasses someday, we have been very diligent to get their eyes checked every year. It wasn’t until last year that the kids actually did need glasses. While their eyes are not as bad as ours are, we want to prevent that by making sure we take care of their eyes now.
Did you know:
With annual comprehensive eye exams, they can be detect eye problems at their early stages when they’re most treatable and before it poses a challenge for kids in school. And getting this done before school starts, allows the ophthalmologist to be able to catch and correct any vision problems that may disrupt learning in the classroom and also, if left untreated, even minor eye problems can lead to permanent blindness. Visit the Think About Your Eyes eye care professional locator to find an eye doctor near you and schedule an exam.
